In partnership with UNCF, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) has developed the EESI Future Climate Leaders Scholarship Program to provide a merit-based scholarship to support a minority student who is preparing for a career related to environmental, energy, or climate issues. This scholarship opportunity is open to students who will be enrolled as a sophomore or junior in Spring 2021 at a HBCU in the Mid-Atlantic or Southern Region. The selected recipient is eligible for renewal the following year if requirements are met. 

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  2. Be a U.S. citizen.
  3. A sophomore or junior enrolled full-time at an HBCU in the Mid-Atlantic or Southern Region (Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia).
  4. Be pursuing a degree in a relevant field of study (i.e. a declared major in biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, environmental science or policy, history, physics, political science, and sociology).

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online by the due date, and must include:

  1. A current academic transcript.
  2. A 500-word essay communicating an interest in environmental, energy, and climate policy issues consistent with EESI’s mission and vision.
  3. A current resume.
  4. One letter of recommendation from a faculty member or an administrator.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants who have submitted completed applications will be notified of scholarship decisions approximately 8 weeks after the application due date.

Letter of Recommendation Guidance

One letter of recommendation (LOR) is required to complete this application. The recommender must be a faculty member or an administrator. The LOR must be made through the online Applicant System and must be received by the application due date. Emailed LORs will not be accepted.

Applicants should give the recommender ample time to complete the LOR by entering all recommender information (name and email) as early as possible. The recommender will be sent automated instructions at the email address provided to submit the LOR in the Applicant System. Applicants will receive "Invite References" reminders until a recommender is invited.
