PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In partnership with the Reboot Representation Tech Coalition, the BFF in Computing program will build community and provide academic support for African American women majoring in computing degree programs.

Academic performance in the intro-series of courses in computer science are key determinants in successful matriculation in the computing majors.  These intro-series courses particularly CS1 (Intro to CS/Programming) and CS2 (Data Structures and Algorithms) collectively serve as a gateway to academic success towards completion of a degree and preparation for internships and, ultimately, a career in the tech industry.  This program will provide significant support for Black female computing scholars.

 PROGRAM COMPONENTS

 Academic Support 

Digital learning environment for students to engage in computer science assignments while receiving instantaneous feedback, instruction, and mentoring. Additionally, engaged professors and professionals with PhDs in CS/E to present key topics that will be covered during online tutorial webinars.

Professional Development

Career and leadership development via focused curriculum and mentoring.

 Mentors

Seasoned employees in computer science/engineering, computing technology or information sciences serving as mentors. The mentors will be key to providing continued exposure for the scholars to the computing world, career options, and a resource for the scholars during their summer internships.

 ELIGIBLITY REQUIREMENTS** 

  • **Female of African descent,  
  • **Fulltime enrollment at an accredited four-year college or university (preference given to HBCU students)
  • **Classification as a freshman or sophomore at time of application,  
  • **Minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA,  
  • **Major in a computing field (select computer science for any computing related major)

 

 **SELECTED PARTICIPANTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR CONTINUED ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT AFTER SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE 2020-2021 PROGRAM YEAR REQUIREMENTS & AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE FOR $5,000.00 SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2021-2022 AND 2022-2023 ACADEMIC YEARS.
