In partnership with UNCF, Mildred C. McCoo, Glenda McCoo Wina, Ms. Marilyn McCoo Davis and Mr. William Davis, Jr. have developed the Mary Holloway McCoo, M.D. and Wayman Glenn McCoo, Sr. M.D. Scholarship to provide two need-based scholarships to students pursuing a medical school degree. This one time scholarship opportunity is open to second year or greater full-time medical students pursuing an M.D. degree program and will be awarded $2,500 in the Spring semester and $2,500 in the Fall semester. 

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Possess a minimum 500 MCAT score and an undergraduate grade point average of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale
  2. Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (“FAFSA”) form
  3. Have demonstrated unmet need as verified by their college or university.
  4. Be a second year or greater full-time medical school student who is pursuing an M.D. degree program.

** Preference will be given to a student of African American descent with consideration given to students of Native American or Latinx descent.

** First preference will be given to a candidate who attends Meharry Medical College with second preference given to a candidate who attends Howard University, UCLA, or UC Davis.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online by the due date, and must include:

  1. A current academic transcript
  2. A copy of the applicants official MCAT test score
  3. A 1-page personal statement of career interests (400-600 words)

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants who have submitted complete applications will be notified of scholarship decisions approximately 8 weeks after the application due date.

Selected recepients may be eligible for renewal upon meeting eligibility requirments. 

Personal Statement Guidance

The applicant's personal statement must be a 1-page (400-600 words) essay about how the applicant has overcome adversity and exemplifies the following behaviors:

  1. Being clear, collaborative, and forthright.
  2. Acting with integrity in all areas of their life.
  3. Showing a drive for continuous learning and development.
  4. Continuously challenging their assumptions and exploring new alternatives.
