Through its work in advancing diverse youth in corporate America, INROADS envisions a world where diversity and inclusion enrich the composition and culture of business and social communities.

Administered by UNCF, the HBCU Sustainable Communities Initiative Scholarship Program reflects INROADS' commitment to providing students with educational and career development opportunities through scholarship awards and prospective internships. This year, the program will award scholarships to 50 Black / African American students, who share a passion for creating more sustainable communities.

To apply, you must be enrolled full-time as a college undergraduate junior for the upcoming 2022 – 2023 academic year. Applicants are required to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (“FAFSA”) form and have a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants also must attend an UNCF member institution in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, or Virginia (see the full list of eligible institutions under “Colleges/Universities” on this page) and be majoring in STEM, business, or sustainability related disciplines.

*Preference will be given to students majoring in: Agriculture, Engineering, Technology, Environmental & Conservation Sciences, Sustainability Studies, City/Community/Urban Planning, Architecture, Applied Sciences, Information Technologies, and Business Administration.

Completed applications will include the following:

  1. A response to all required fields (notated by an *);
  2. A resume, which includes a summary of activities and leadership;
  3. A 500 -750-word essay responding to the following prompt:
    “Please describe how the teachings within your current major could be used to positively affect sustainability projects within your community. And, through the perspective of your major, tell us about a career you see for yourself based on what you have learned about sustainability.”

Selected students will receive a $5,000 award for the 2022 – 2023 academic year; the scholarship may be renewable for one additional year.

Applicants who have submitted complete applications will be sent an email confirming that your application has been received. If you do not receive this email, the application was probably not submitted correctly.

Award notifications are also announced by email within 10 - 12 weeks of the application closing date.
