UNCF is proud to announce the opening of the Ossie Davis Legacy Award Scholarship application for the 2018-2019 academic year. The Ossie Davis Legacy Award Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of Mr. Ossie Davis who was a well-read thinker, communicator, humorist and humanist who influenced society and cared deeply about the world, the people, and his family. Family and friends who understood Mr. Davis’ passion for education and his commitment to the young people who will shape our future established The Ossie Davis Legacy Award Scholarship. The award is designed to provide scholarships to African American incoming freshman, college sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students attending the following Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) beginning Fall 2018:
Benedict College, Bethune Cookman University, Claflin University, Clark Atlanta University, Florida Memorial University, Howard University, Lane College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Virginia Union University or Xavier University of Louisiana.
- Applicants must maintain a 3.0 or better on 4 scale GPA ;
- Applicants must major in African American Studies, Communications, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Performing Arts, Political Science, Social Sciences, Theater Arts/Drama or Visual Arts;
- Applicants must submit an essay about what they learned from the activism of Ossie Davis and his peers and connect that work to the activism of today; and
- Applicants must upload a letter of recommendation from a college dean or professor to the online application by the application deadline.
For scholarship award consideration, the online application must be submitted by the application deadline - November 9, 2018. If selected applicants will be invited to a semi-final round, which requires the submission of an electronic portfolio of accomplishments and goals. The portfolio may contain pictures, drawings or any other evidence that reflects the student's involvement with the arts as activism. A narrative description of the portfolio must also be included.
**2018-2019 Award will be titled The Ossie Davis Legacy Award Scholarship-Centennial Scholar in commemoration of Ossie Davis’ 100th birthday.
